Reflecting our True Nature
As I do every morning, unless it is storming, I step onto my balcony and greet the world.
This morning as the sun was slowly making its appearance and the Oak tree in the courtyard of my apartment complex came into view, I noticed its bareness. My first communication with it was, “I’ll see you next spring,” which was instantly replaced by, “No, I see you now.”
The tree is still there. It is whole and complete. It has only changed its outward appearance, which is its nature as a tree.
Like an Oak tree, I reveal my true nature when I remove the roles I have placed upon my be-ing, allowing my wholeness to appear, which happens instantly. However, this is not something I can hold onto any more than making it appear. Flickering in and out, it is ever-present, waiting always to reflect its true nature. Meditation allows that awareness to appear with greater ease.
In his book Touching Peace, Thay says that “we don’t have to go anywhere to obtain the truth. We only need to be still, and things will reveal themselves in the still water of our heart”.
The refreshing moon of the Buddha,
is traveling in the sky of utmost emptiness.
If the pond of the mind is still,
the beautiful moon will reflect itself in it.
Breathing in, I see myself as still water.
Breathing out, I reflect things as they are.
Water/Reflecting.
